A Healthy Fear

Exodus 15:11

“Who among the gods is like you, Lord? Who is like you—majestic in holiness, awesome in glory, working wonders?”

We most often think of fear as a frightful emotion of dread in anticipating danger. Also, the Bible calls fear a spirit; one that the Lord hasn’t given us, as He’s given us a spirit of power, love, and a sound mind.

Yet there is another fear we want to have. It’s that emotion of awe, having a deep sense of respect or reverence. This kind of fear we want to reserve for God. It is where we recognize how almighty, powerful, holy, majestic, and terrible He is. Noting, however, the word “terrible” as mentioned in the Bible several times does not imply any form of evil in God, but awe-inspiring greatness.

When we think of our relationship with God and how great the Creator He is, we should remember the blessings of showing Him our utmost reverence. This fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge and wisdom and adds length to life. Moreover, humility is the fear of the Lord, and its payment is riches, honor, and life. Consistently thinking less of ourselves than we ought helps us sustain a humble attitude toward God and others.

King Solomon expressed it as the duty of all mankind to fear God and keep his commandments. While Jesus taught not to fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, to fear the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

We fear the Lord by honoring Him in praise, prayer, and obedience with love and gratitude. We continue to work out our salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in us to will and to act to fulfill His good purpose. Further, we show proper respect to everyone, loving the family of believers, fearing God and honoring the emperor, king, or ruler.
